To ensure that the commitment to the expansion of midwifery in the NWT is realized, we, as residents of the Northwest Territories, petition the Department of Health and Social Services of the Government of the Northwest Territories to:

- fund additional full time, indeterminate positions for the Midwifery Program in Yellowknife, which services families in Yellowknife, Dettah and N’dilo; and

- identify the communities in the Northwest Territories (other than Yellowknife and Fort Smith) who will receive midwifery care by 2012.

Background information

In A Foundation for Change, the Department of Health and Social Services Strategic Plan for residents of the Northwest Territories, it is stated on page 16 that the midwifery program will be expanded by the end of 2012 in order for families to have access to pregnancy and birthing supports closer to home.

The Yellowknife Midwifery Program has a monthly waitlist and is not sustainable in the long term with one midwife alone, on call for 24 hours per day. There is great demand for this service from our mothers and families that is not being fulfilled.
