Petition for GNWT Action on Climate Change and Energy Costs

Background information

Residents of the Northwest Territories call on the GNWT to do the following:

1. Collect a $3.50 tonne (co2eq) levy on carbon pollution from all fossil fuels sales in order to
finance a new fund that would provide financial assistance to:

a) homeowners and businesses to assist them to take action to reduce carbon pollution and
fossil fuel use.

b) Aboriginal governments and community government to undertake community energy
planning and climate adaptation projects.

2. Collect a $3.50 tonne (co2eq) levy on carbon pollution stemming from the oil and gas exploration and production activities in order to contribute to the existing NWT Heritage Fund.

Heating our homes is one of the biggest costs for northern families. Over the past five years, the price of home heating oil has shown extreme volatility and many experts expect oil prices to continue to rise.

If we don’t do anything to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, our cost of living will go up.

At Ecology North, we know that northerners are concerned about both the cost of living and the impact that climate change is having on our environment. Northerners know that fossil fuel over-use is driving climate change.

We believe that we can tackle both climate change and our high energy costs by helping NWT residents and businesses to increase their overall energy efficiency and reduce their reliance on expensive, imported fossil fuels.
